Verde Residence brings a breath of fresh air to South Melbourne’s historic Pickles Street, reviving a 1970s brick house with innovative design and a touch of green. Guided by Monique Vuk of One Wolf Design, this modernised family home now boasts an open layout, natural light, and vibrant green elements that link the indoors to an elegant vine-covered wall outside. Homeowners Rohan and Srna Matthews, along with their two children and two large dogs, sought a home that would feel open and stylish yet offer a sense of sanctuary — a place designed for connection and effortless entertaining.
The transformation of Verde Residence started with a vision to improve natural light and flow. Originally a dark, compartmentalised space with minimal windows, the house was reimagined with bold features such as underfloor heating, natural stone, and mood lighting that infuses each room with warmth and style. “The idea was to create an environment that embraces a modern lifestyle while remaining connected to nature,” says Monique. Now, Verde Residence is a cohesive family retreat where each room opens naturally to the next, with design elements inspired by the nearby green wall filtering throughout the home.
In the main living area, a harmonious blend of modern finishes and organic textures greets guests with a welcoming yet elegant atmosphere. Green marble surfaces in the kitchen and rich chocolate-toned timber anchor the open-plan space, while floor-to-ceiling windows blur the boundary between indoor and outdoor areas. This careful balance of materials and light was achieved through the integration of expansive sliding doors and bifolding windows, creating a flow that connects the home to the lush backyard. A large island bench serves as both a practical workspace and a social hub, ideal for hosting gatherings or enjoying family meals together.

In the bathrooms, earthy textures and natural materials elevate everyday routines into moments of luxury. A handmade Moroccan rain showerhead, micro-mosaic tiles, and sculptural concrete basins transform the main bathroom into a spa-like retreat. The use of microcement on walls and floors provides a clean, modern aesthetic, while terrazzo and vein-cut travertine add richness and depth. “Our goal was to balance practicality with moments of indulgence,” explains Monique, describing the seamless integration of form and function that defines each wet area. The soft lighting and earth-toned palette enhance the calming atmosphere, making these private spaces feel both grounded and refined.
Throughout Verde Residence, a subtle, moody palette brings an intimate feel that complements its open layout. Monochromatic and green accents continue from the kitchen into the living and dining areas, creating a sense of continuity and harmony. The hallway, lined with bespoke artwork and feature lighting, gives the space a gallery-like quality while providing a thoughtful transition between spaces. The hidden bar, tucked just off the main living area, adds a touch of sophistication, enhancing the home’s appeal as an entertainer’s paradise.

Energy efficiency was a core consideration, with double-glazed windows and recycled hardwood used throughout. These sustainable choices not only enhance comfort and reduce environmental impact, but also align with the family’s commitment to thoughtful design. The innovative use of greenery throughout the residence, along with environmentally friendly features, reflects the homeowners’ respect for nature, while custom touches such as a large pivot door and integrated shelving further personalise the space. The result is a home that marries thoughtful design with natural beauty, creating a vibrant sanctuary where sustainability and style live in perfect harmony.
