Gabriela Azar Schreiner describes herself as passionate and emotional. It’s delving into those deep, honest emotions that brings life and energy to her captivating large-scale abstract canvases.

A self-taught artist, Gabriela worked as a lawyer in Argentina before arriving on our shores 16 years ago. “I was six months pregnant and life was about to be quite different for me,” Gabriela recalls. She had painted a few artworks before and it was while at home with her children that she began dabbling in art again. “It really went from there and I have been painting ever since. Now I cannot stop painting; I paint seven days a week. It is who I am.”

Next To Me

Her work is all-encompassing. Mostly it’s full of energy and movement, at times appearing as though almost animated on the canvas. Other times it is a little more subdued, a delicate dance of colour, form and texture that is calming and uplifting.

When producing her art, Gabriela begins the process with selecting colours that rouse her creativity in that given moment. “I star with a couple of colours, but I end up with lots,” she shares. “Sometimes it’s more planned and certain colours appeal to me, and sometimes it is all just a beautiful accident. Last week I was using greens, pinks and reds because of the flowers that were blooming in my garden. On another week it might be browns and golds because I would have felt drawn to or comfortable with those colours.”

Her work evolves organically and intuitively. Music is her muse, but she is not drawn to any particular music genre, artist or song. “I paint with music because then I don’t think, I feel. The lines in my art are my movements. Painting becomes the visual representation of my dance,” Gabriela enthuses.

In her commissioned works she adopts a more disciplined method. “I approach commissioned work differently as the process is different for me; I need to think more and not let emotions take over.”

Gabriela’s art is dynamic and ever-changing. At the moment she is working on the flowers in her own garden. “I am looking for a new colour as well. I think it is time!” Gabriela’s artworks are available at Art Lovers Australia. artloversaustralia.com.au/artist/gabriela-azar-schreiner/
